The Aggression Cup™ Illustration
Oct 02, 2019Addressing disruptive behaviors is simple. It takes a little time, some practice, and, for some of us, a change of heart. However, teaching people to address disruptive behaviors is a bit more complex.
Innovative learning tools, such as effective illustrations, really help. Enter the Aggression Cup™. We all have one. We carry it around all day long. See mine in the picture... Yours may look a little different.
But how does it work? And why should you care about my Aggression Cup™… or anyone else's?
To better understand the concept of an Aggression Cup™, consider this: we each own our cups; we're responsible for what's in our cups and what we do with them; no one else is responsible for our Aggression Cup™. We are all responsible, however, for how we influence each other's Aggression Cup™.
Let’s look at a few examples of how our behaviors can influence the average person:
- Fill and Spill: Our behaviors can influence anyone’s Aggression Cup™ contents and even fill it with aggression sludge. It doesn't take much to bump it spilling the ugly contents all over both of us. The quickest way to fill and spill… disrespect someone.
- Starve It: You can leave someone’s Aggression Cup™ unaffected, being careful to add nothing, and avoid bumping into it. This usually involves staying away from someone or navigating your interactions with a set of tactics that don’t upset the Aggression Cup™. The easiest tactic is to deliver constant respect.
- Healthy Leak: If you’ve strengthened your influence skills, you may be able to help someone remove some aggression from their cup. Less sludge in the Aggression Cup™ means a lower likelihood of a messy spillover.
We've discussed disruptive behaviors and why you should care about them in a previous post. For several reasons, especially safety, it is in your best interest to assertively use your influence to impact the behavior of others whenever possible.
The Aggression Cup™ illustration helps you see the relationship between your actions and someone else’s. Be intentional. Don’t miss your Aggression Cup™ opportunity! We can help you learn the skills you need to be more intentional.
